All highlights of the season at a glance
It's officially spring. In some places in Europe, we were already able to enjoy this last weekend and took the first long, sunny bike rides. But we were not the only ones, because the professionals have already been on the road racing tracks for weeks.
With the San Remo race, the cycling season is officially open. We loyal fans have our hearts set on it, and to make sure that none of us misses any of the important races, we at buycycle have prepared this 2023 cycling calendar for you. The date, the importance of the event and the channels where you can follow it, of course, included.

Le Strade Bianche
Wann: 04.03.2023
What: The eagerly anticipated start to the season is the Strade Bianche race, held annually as part of the UCI World Tour. In early March, the pros whizzed over the iconic white gravel roads of Tuscany. This year's winner of the important Italian competition, which is one of the 5 classics of one-day races, was Britain's Thomas Pidcock. Demi Vollering of the Netherlands won the Strade Bianche Femminile.

Milan - San Remo

What: The San Remo race, also affectionately known as the"Classicissima", is also one of the 5 monuments of cycling and has been held annually in Italy since 1907, traditionally on a Saturday at the end of March. With a distance of almost 300 km, it is the longest UCI one-day race and is one of the most difficult to win due to its multi-faceted course. This year, world cross champion Mathieu van der Poel made it. He followed in the footsteps of his grandfather Raymond Poulidor, who took home the Classicissima trophy back in 1961.

What: The week-long stage race has been taking the world's best cyclists over 1194 kilometers from Sant Feliu de Guixols to Barcelona since 1911. The program includes three challenging climbs, but sprinters and puncheurs will also get a taste of the seven stages. This year's favorites are considered to be Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic, who will also compete against each other in the Giro d'Italia a few weeks later.

Ronde van Vlaanderen

What: The Tour of Flanders is an internationally important cycling race and Belgian folk festival at the same time - frites, beer and music included. Men and women compete on the varied route, which is mainly characterized by many smaller mountain climbs and winding cobblestone roads (so-called Hellinge). There are 273 km for the men and 158 km for the women, who have to cover 13 instead of 19 sections. The day before the official race, there will be an Everyman race on the key sections of the Ronde - so if you want to try your hand at the famous Hellingen yourself, head to Bruges.

Also called"L'Enfer du Nord" (the hell of the north), it has sent many a starting favorite to the hospital instead of across the finish line. On 256km for the men and 145km for the women the athletes conquer concrete, gravel, dust (or mud depending on the weather), a real torture for man and material. It is without a doubt the most unpredictable classic race - which of course makes it even more exciting as a spectator...

What: The Ardennes one-day race is topographically the most demanding spring competition. Over 250km (140km for the women) it goes from Liège via Bastogne and back. What makes the route special are the countless short, steep climbs - more than 4,200 meters of altitude must be conquered, but the changeable weather conditions in April also present a challenge. The race is a true veteran, it has been held since 1892 and therefore also bears the nickname of the"Doyenne" (the oldest).

The world's second most important cycling race brings together the best of the best and during its 21 stages no type of rider is left out. On 3489km single time trials, sprint stages and mountain climbs line up in front of breathtaking scenery. If you want to join in the cycling, you can take part in the Giro d'Italia Virtual again this year and conquer the route from your home computer in the cycling simulator. The women's Giro d'Italia will take place from June 30 to July 9, 2023, and will start in Rome instead of ending there like the men's race.

What: Many riders(.) use the biggest cycling race in Switzerland as a final preparation for the Tour de France(Femmes). The stage race has been held since 1933 and consists of several mountain stages and an individual time trial, over a total of 1300km it takes the athletes:inside through all parts of Switzerland.

What: The queen of cycling races, the most important date in the calendar of all fans is of course the Tour de France. This year will be started in Bilbao in the Spanish Basque Country and directly the first stage is a special challenge with dizzying 3300 meters of altitude. This year's route takes the athletes in 21 stages over the Puy de Dome (finally again!), the Col de la Loze and also over peaks like the Grand Colombier. Highlights of the Tour will certainly be the first sprints before and after Bayonne, the return of the Puy de Dome as a history-making stage section and the individual time trial from Passy to Combloux. Finally, on June 23, the cycling heroes are traditionally expected on the Champs Elysées in Paris. On the same day, the women will also start for the Tour de France Femmes in Clermont-Ferrand.

The best of the best from the disciplines road, track, mountain bike, indoor, trials, BMX freestyle, BMX racing, Gran Fondo and paracycling will be crowned - only the cyclocross competition will take place separately. The eleven-day event is the biggest in the history of cycling and offers spectators from all over the world non-stop cycling action.

What: The Vuelta is the third and final Grand Tour, alongside the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France. For the great cycling veterans it heralds the end of the season, for many young athletes it is the first three-week tour of their career and is used as an entry opportunity as the media exposure is lower than for the other Grands Tours. In 2023, it's 21 stages over 3153.8 km from Barcelona to Madrid, starting with a team time trial. It's a race for climbers, with a full nine mountain finishes included in the route. But a bunch sprint is also likely despite the topographical challenges, so it should be particularly exciting in the middle mountain stage.

What:"Il Lombardia" is number five of the most important one-day cycling races. Since 2014 it is traditionally started in Como or Bergamo and also the finals take place there. Even if the route is a little surprise every year, it is impossible to imagine the Tour of Lombardy without the climb to the small picturesque church of Madonna del Ghisallo . As one of the last races of the season, it is also called the race of the falling leaves. In 2023 the athletes will start and finish in Como.
